The shift in ideas between Version 1 and Version 2 of the ISTE standards for technology made a large difference in the minds of teachers. Version 1 of the standards were more hands on standards, things such as how to use a computer, keyboarding skills and word processing. Version 2 refined the work from hands on, physical standards to more complex and thought provoking. Items such as online presence and global awareness make the standards more and more difficult to accomplish.
I actually wonder if a version 3 is really going to be necessary? I would like to think that education would move to a level that having connections online will be as common as a pencil being used in a classroom. Yes, there is upkeep and maintenance to allow technology education to occur, but not any different to the purchase of textbooks and supplies that happen every year. I am not sure we are quiet at that stage, but I do believe that will be the next step ISTE needs to make in regards to the standards.
Within the nature of the evolution of the standards, I believe they will become more and more global related. With some much emphasis being placed on the global market and connections, students, teachers and administrators need to be aware and interact at a global level, now more than ever before. With the competing nature of jobs now taking on global proportions, where students have to compete online for jobs with students from India or China, we as educators need to make it a common part of education to interact and learn online. Without the formal interaction and training for teachers especially, but also students, we are doing a disservice to students. More and more teachers need to become aware of what they are doing online or actually create content online. If teachers are not actively engaged in the process, how can they train or monitor students that are already online?
