I am choosing to tackle Element 2: Digital Commerce. This is something that I don't believe is taught anywhere on purpose in the district. We have numerous groups that use online tools, stores and auctions all the time, but I don't believe we have ever purposely taught a course in it or had it as part of the curriculum. I would actually suggest that it be included in core classes, such as English, so that all students would have a foundation in it.
Along with this, is the expectation that all technology instruction comes from school. At some point, parents and community have to take part in the discussion. We see students 6 hours a day, sometimes 1 if you are upper level.... yet we are expected to teach them everything they will possibly need to survive in the world.
This is an area that I struggle with teaching students about. I guess I struggle with the concept that the school is teaching all of the digital citizenship and that we are making the assumption that they are getting no training from home. At what point do the schools expect that others will teach something of the curriculum... especially parents. I guess I see more and more topics being dumped on teachers and being told "good luck", with the expectation of teaching everything. Where does it end?
